Shanghai Florence, More Cooperation in Design & Exchange

 

 On November 10th, 2012, Mr. He Shouchang, deputy director of Shanghai Creative Industry Center, signed the agreement of “Shanghai-Florence Sino-Italian Design Exchange Center” with Mr. Matteo Renzi, Mayor of Florence. Professor Fang Shouen, vice president of Tongji University signed “Memorandum of Understanding between Municipality of Florence and Tongji University for Establishment of Tongji University Overseas Campus in Florence” with Mayor Matteo Renzi, and Ms. Stella Targetti, vice president of Italy Tuscany Region. Ms. Wang Xinxia, General Consul of Consulate General of People’s Republic of China in Florence participated in the meeting.

Italy is a strong country on innovation and design. Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance and has a history of promoting many famous universities overseas campus for a hundred years. In recent years, supported by governments of China and Italy, China and Italy have gained a rapid development trend on innovation cooperation and design cooperation, especially interactive in design. In April 2011, Prof. Wan Gang, Minister of Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, with Italian Ministry of Public Administration and Innovation, established China-Italy Design & Innovation Centre at Tongji University, and signed a new cooperation agreement with Italy Tuscany Region. On the premise, after inspecting and negotiating more than one year, relying on Shanghai-Florence Sino-Italian Design Exchange Center, Tongji University signed an agreement with Municipality of Florence and Municipality of Tuscany Region on establishment of Tongji University Overseas Campus in Florence.

Tongji University overseas campus will act as a platform for Tongji University in order to cooperate with Italian universities, including University of Florence, and with educational institutions of European and American. The overseas campus will introduce internationalized educational resources and organize different long-term and short-term classes on the field of art, design, architecture, fashion, cultural heritage, and assist with humanities’ core curriculum, such as history of art, Renaissance Studies, international politics, in order to establish Tongji high-level talents training platform in Italy and even in Europe to create a better oversea condition for learnin. It will implement the strategy of internationalization of 3-600 talents program , which will create an oversea learning platform of Tongji style.

Furthermore, as an economic, financial and modern center in China, Shanghai is one of the cities in which innovation industry develops fastest, most powerful, and relatively mature, and has cooperated with Italy on innovation for different ways, based on good foreign cooperation. Under the assistance of CIDIC, the establishment of Shanghai-Florence Sino-Italian Design Exchange Center shall quicken the pace of promoting the cooperation between China and Italy in innovation. Tongji University, as an academic support unit, will fully display its role of China and Italy Design Innovation Center (CIDIC) and China and Italy Strategic Advisory Board and take responsibility on planning and organizing exchange training classes and relative lectures for high-level talents from China and Italy. Meanwhile, Tongji University overseas campus will promote cooperation with Italy governments including Tuscany Region, provide more and better opportunities for internship and jobs, and enhance win-win cooperation for small-scale corporations from China and Italy.

The establishment of Tongji University overseas campus in Florence is causing a big influence in Italy.
